Tips for Decoding Rosacea Terms

Some articles about rosacea, particularly those reporting results of scientific studies, may contain unfamiliar medical terminology. Here is a list of some frequently used rosacea terms and their meanings.

 

  • Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelids.

 

  • Chalazion: A lesion on the eyelid due to plugging of the meibomian glands.

 

  • Edema: Swelling from abnormally large amounts of fluids in the tissues.

 

  • Erythema: Abnormal redness of the skin.

 

  • Flushing: Transient redness of the face and neck.

 

  • Ocular: Relating to the eyes.

 

  • Papule: A small, dome-shaped elevation of the skin, which may also be inflamed.

 

  • Phymatous: Enlarged due to the growth of excess tissue.

 

  • Plaque: An elevated patch on the skin, which may also be red.

 

  • Pustule: A small soft elevation of the skin filled with a white substance.

 

  • Rhinophyma: Enlargement of the nose with excess tissue.

 

  • Telangiectasia: Tiny blood vessels visible through the skin.
