Tips for Responding to Rude Comments

Some rosacea sufferers have reported that the physical effects of the disease have led to rude comments, stares or even jokes about their appearance. Here are some ways you can take control of these situations and feel good about yourself:

  • Realize that most individuals are unaware of rosacea, so take into account that most reactions are simply caused by curiosity and ignorance of the disease, rather than some negative intent.

  • Try turning the awkward situation into a positive educational opportunity by openly discussing your rosacea and educating the offender.

  • Take the initiative for explaining the disease to people you see regularly -- especially your employer and co-workers, who may have real concerns about whether the condition will affect you on the job. Put to rest the misconceptions that rosacea's symptoms are caused by poor hygiene or excessive drinking or may be contagious. Pass along educational materials on rosacea if appropriate.

  • Finally, there may be some rude comments that don't deserve any response or reaction. Take pride in knowing that you're a better person for being more sensitive to the feelings of others.
