Enjoy Holiday Beverages without the Flare-ups!

holiday drinksThe holiday season is here and so are the numerous social engagements and family events that mark this time of year.

Eggnog, mulled wine and hot cider are often regular attendees at events like this. For some, an initial pit stop at the bar before mingling can ease social anxiety, and grabbing a refill is a great excuse for a break in conversation.

However, for many rosacea patients, heated beverages, alcohol and strongly spiced drinks can also trigger flare-ups. Here are a few tips and tricks for enjoying holiday beverages while avoiding the sudden appearance of rosacea signs and symptoms.

BYOB: Bring your own beverage! If attending a potluck or family event, offer to bring the drinks. Not only is this easier than cooking something, you’ll be able to control the choices available. If alcohol triggers your symptoms, avoid including alcohol in the recipe and allow people to add their own if they wish. Spiced cider and punch are fun communal beverages that can be made non-alcoholic and topped off with alcohol if it is desired.

Put it on ice: In addition to alcohol, heated beverages are a common trigger for rosacea patients. Some patients find they are more affected by the temperature of a beverage than the alcohol content. If hot drinks affect your skin, try adding ice or letting it cool before consuming it.

Tis the season for mocktails! The easiest way to avoid flare-ups from the bar at a holiday party may be to avoid alcohol altogether. If this makes you feel self-conscious, sip on club soda with a splash of juice and a twist of lime or lemon. Consider watering down the holiday punch by mixing it with ginger ale or another soda, or order a half portion of a holiday cocktail and double up on the ice. Instead of mulled wine or cider, try a cup of tea with a slice of lemon or lime and a cinnamon stick.
