Fending Off Fall Flare-Ups

Assorted bright red leaves still attached to their branches.Autumn brings plenty of pleasantness, like cool breezes, brightly colored leaves, and fun outdoor events and activities. But no season is risk-free for rosacea patients. Like summer, fall comes with its triggers. Remember these tips to ensure your autumn remains trouble-free!

Seasonal Beverages. It’s pumpkin spice latte, mulled wine, cocoa, and hot apple cider season! Heated, heavily spiced and alcoholic beverages turn up at many fall events, and are notorious triggers for many rosacea sufferers. When you enjoy a steamy and/or flavorful mugful, make sure it’s not too hot and ask if it contains ingredients that spark flare-ups. Also, while summer’s heat may be gone, keep hydrating with cool, clear water.

Wear Layers. Fall temperatures are changeable, and hot and cold weather switch quickly. Avoid triggering cold and hot spells with layered clothing that allows you to wear more or less to beat the heat or kill the chill as needed.

Apply Sunscreen. Even when the temperature dips, the sun never stops shining. Apply at least 30 SPF sunscreen before engaging in outdoor activities, including forest hikes, hay rides, apple-picking, and pumpkin patch visits, even on seemingly overcast days.

Wind Protection. Autumn briskness is delightful, but it may increase the risk of skin irritation. When the temperature drops and the wind kicks up, monitor how long you’re outside. Collared coats, scarves, and similar comfy outerwear keep you cozy without risking flare-ups.

Keep (Mentally) Cool. Have fun, but remember that stress and excitement are also triggers. Playing games, watching sports, and generally being active and competitive raises your stress levels. If you find yourself getting too worked up, talk a stroll, practice breathing exercises, or otherwise step away and relax.

Follow Treatment Protocol. Autumn is a time of change, but not for your treatment. Stay on top of your meds, and remember to bring them along on vacation. Maintain your skincare regimen, bringing the cleansers, moisturizers, cosmetics, and other items that help you primp and clean up without the risk of a flare-up. Above all, follow your doctor’s orders!
